| About the "I Love Quoddy" Coalition |
Located
at the mouth
of the Bay of
Fundy on the New Brunswick - Maine border, the Quoddy Region is, for
its size, the richest marine area in the Gulf of Maine. For
over
10,000 years, this unique ecosystem has provided for the inhabitants of
these shores and over 3,000 species of marine creatures. Today, based
on tourism, fisheries, aquaculture, research, and education, our
eco-economy brings over a half billion dollars annually to the area and
is the last refuge for many threatened species including the north
Atlantic right whale, the most endangered marine mammal on the planet.
We are the original sustainable community, but the continued existence of this natural gift has been constantly threatened by potential and real developments. Since World War I, developers have proposed mammoth port development, oil refineries and tank farms, LNG terminals, coastal quarries, and other developments that threatened existing sustainable enterprises. Throughout all of these proposals, Quoddy residents have been on the defensive evoking a NIMBY* response from the developers. We think that we need to take the offensive. It's time for us to show that "We Love Quoddy" and to proactively protect and develop our unique ecosystem and the sustainable enterprises that depend on it. Interested? We will be building this website and visiting a community near you soon to explain how this campaign works and how you can participate. In the meantime, contact us if you have questions that are not answered on this website.
* NIMBY - "Not in my back yard" is a derogatory acronym applied by developers to residents who oppose certain developments in their area. Stewards Associates Bay Watchers Landowners Kids |
